Chef and Co-owner, Mixtli; San Antonio, TX

Diego Galicia ‘10 is chef and co-owner of Mixtli in San Antonio, Texas. Born in Toluca, Mexico, Mixtli is a very personal and intimate culinary project that reflects Diego's love and passion for his native country. Moving to Texas in 2002, he studied psychology at The University of Texas at San Antonio before graduating from The Culinary Institute of America (CIA). While a student at the CIA, he was employed at a brasserie and a local French bakery where he led Sunday brunch. Building upon that formative experience, Diego returned to his roots by working in his native Mexico at Azul Condesa, owned by renowned chef Ricardo Munoz. Stints at Michelin-starred restaurants Atelier Crenn in San Francisco and Moto in Chicago followed before he opened Mixtli in 2013 with partner, Rico Torres. In the spring of 2017, he and Torres were named Food & Wine magazine's Best New Chefs. In 2018 they were named semifinalists in the James Beard Foundation award category of Best Chef Southwest and in 2022 for Outstanding Restaurant. Mixtli has received the CultureMap Tastemaker Award for best restaurant for the past three consecutive years and in 2018 and 2019 it was named San Antonio’s best restaurant by the San Antonio Express-News. The pair have been featured in Texas Monthly and USA Today, and on the Travel Channel and Hulu. @atthediegoshow
